Anting New Town is a German-themed residential development in Jiading, a suburban district of Shanghai known for its automobile industry. The town was completed around 2004 (designed by a German firm), emerging alongside other “European-style” real estate projects marketed to China’s growing urban middle class. However, it soon became a ghost town. No one wanted to live there because of bad Feng Shui.
Made entirely with 3D program Maya, the video features miniature apartments modeled after Anting New Town, two Sketchup default characters, and a purchased VW 3D model. Nina, a married woman living in Germany, is accidentally routed to Volkswagen Shanghai when she calls VW roadside assistance. On the other end is Yue, who uses the English sales name “Dave,” an agent living in Anting. Their late-night service calls gradually turn intimate, only to end when Yue suddenly disappears.
