The building clusters have remained vacant for years due to financial collapse. Imagining an architect designing these buildings that would ultimately fail to fulfill their intended function, I engaged in a collaboration between myself and the fictional architect to create a simulacra through paper models. These replicas share an ambiguous sense of realness with the unfinished buildings, both remain inert in time. On the fences surrounding the construction site, the developer put up advertising slogans. Parts of the characters fell off the board due to deterioration, leaving the words partially legible, such as: “找到回家的路（Find the Way Home）” (as seen in drawing #5).

Anting New Town (安亭新镇) is a German-themed residential development in Jiading, a suburban district of Shanghai known for its automobile industry. Designed by the German architectural firm Albert Speer & Partner and commissioned by the Shanghai municipal government, the town was completed around 2004, emerging alongside other European-style real estate projects marketed to China’s growing urban middle class.

In this work, Anting becomes a site of misplaced desire. Nina, a married woman living in Germany, is accidentally routed to Volkswagen Shanghai when she calls VW roadside assistance. On the other end is Yue, who uses the English sales name “Dave,” an agent living in Anting. Their late-night service calls gradually turn intimate, only to end when Yue suddenly disappears.

Kunming Chronicles is an ongoing documentary project about a community of amateur fossil hunters in Kunming, China. The work explores the intersections of urban development, geological time, and informal knowledge. Through an experimental documentary combining on-site video and hand-drawn animation, the work explores how fossils circulate through systems of exchange outside formal scientific or commercial structures.

I first encountered this community while joining fossil-hunting trips around Kunming. Many of these expeditions take place in landscapes shaped by stalled real-estate development. One of the most striking sites lies within a partially abandoned housing project, where excavation exposed layers of sedimentary rock later identified by paleontologists as part of the Guanshan biota, a Cambrian fossil deposit. The same geological conditions that preserved ancient marine life also complicated large-scale construction, creating an unexpected overlap between speculative urban expansion and deep geological history.

Although formal paleontological research at the site largely ceased after the publication of Guanshan Biota, the book continues to circulate among amateur fossil hunters as an informal field guide. Community members use its maps and descriptions to relocate fossil-bearing areas, often making discoveries of their own. This movement of knowledge—from institutional science into vernacular practice—forms one of the project’s central concerns.

The work focuses on the social life of fossils within this community. Fossils are not treated solely as commodities or scientific objects, but are gifted, traded, collectively identified, and incorporated into personal collections. During these trips, strangers and friends alike offered me fossils they had found. Hunters share photographs of discoveries online, comparing specimens against paleontological documentation to identify trilobites, Cricocosmia, and rarer species. These practices suggest alternative relationships to value, ownership, and stewardship that do not fit neatly within either market logic or state-centered models of collective property.

The project is shaped by the collision of multiple temporalities: the accelerated pace of urbanization and speculative development in contemporary China, alongside the vast timescale embedded within Cambrian fossils. Kunming’s unfinished developments and exposed sedimentary layers become sites where these temporalities converge.

Stranger Within is a video recorded interview where I ask three informants to take turns to look at my face, describe it verbally while I translate their descriptions into diagrammatic drawings. The video is projected on a piece of frosted tempered glass. Both sides of the projected glass are visible. The video on one side of the glass is a mirror image of the other side, matching the interview’s videography shot from two perspectives of the conversation.

Each drawing has two layers. The bottom page is a live transcription of what the informants were saying (as seen in the high-angle shot in the video), and the top semi-translucent page is a dynamic translation I made from listening to the audio a second time.Informants: Danyang Guo, Kendrick Castellanos, Melanie Wu

In Absentia is a fictional exhibition installed in an office in Midtown Manhattan, exploring glass as an architecturalmaterial imbued with utopian ideas. This show displays miniatures of 20th-century glass architectures that were either destroyed or neverbuilt: El Lissitzky's Cloud-Iron, the Crystal Palace, Bruno Taut’s Glass House, Frank Lloyd Wright's East Village Towers, and Mies van der Rohe's Friedrichstrasse Skyscraper. These models are owned by a fictional filmmaker, Raymond Fluorescence, whose obsession with crystals led him to envision a cinematic language based on total transparency. However, Fluorescence’s dream of capturing the essence of transparency through architecture and film ultimately failed, leaving these structures—both real and imagined—as lasting monuments to unfulfilled utopian vision.

Excerpt from exhibition wall text: "On June 17, 1965, Fluorescence wrote the final scene for one of his unrealized films titled 'in Absentia':'I dreamed that I was floating through a museum with one single room where I was the curator. The room is sterilized and cold. The walls are made of mirrors, yet my own reflection is missing from my sight. I go up to a glass display case with dim blue light. In it, next to others, stands a crystal, dully shining, inert, model of a building. I am no less big, no less small than the object. There is no inside of an outside...'"

Whispers in the Basement is a site-specific sound installation. The Parsons building on 13th street shares a basement with Planet Fitness. Coming from the locked door to the gym’s subfloor, sounds of treadmills and upbeat music can be heard in the underground space of the institution. Pre-recorded sounds from the basement is played on a phone. The phone is inserted into the drywall of my studio at Parsons through an ominous cut.
